»My neighborhood could be made more livable by the reconfiguration of a single intersection. Virgil, Sunset, Hollywood, and Hillhurst all come together at a single point. If I could walk through this intersection, I could get to the Vermont/Sunset red line station in 10 minutes. But this intersection normally adds 4 to 6 minutes of waiting time, given how long the light cycles are, and that I have to wait twice and walk an additional several hundred feet (compared to a straight line) no matter what I do.
At the moment, the former Blockbuster video on one corner, and the former auto lot on the opposite corner (and the former Hanging Store next door), are both out of business vacant buildings - this seems like an opportunity to do some reconfiguration, hopefully without harming the Vista Theater and couple other businesses that still exist.
I don't know if an overpass, or roundabout, or disconnection of the streets makes the most sense, but a community discussion would be great!
»You can also look at the population figures for Downtown over the last 20 years. As density went up, population went waaay up. People voted with their feet on this one. The proof is that people want both places to live and places to work/shop/eat/experience culture.
»I would like to see police patrolling on foot and on bicycles to deter crime in crime ridden areas.
Police patrol in cars mostly and it seems like if they get out of the car that their presence would
more effectively reduce crime.

»Jeff J: You can empirically determine if it is a fallacy or not. Just look at the population figures for Hollywood over the last 20 years. As density went up, population went down. People voted with their feet on this one. The proof is that people don't want density or congestion.
»It is a fallacy to suggest that there can be universal agreement on what makes a neighborhood "liveable." For some people, it is single-family homes and an absence of any traffic congestion. For some, it is access to many types of goods and services within walking/biking distance, which requires higher-density housing and (usually) traffic congestion. LA needs to come to grips with the fact that not all neighborhoods can or should be the same, and pick the places where "access" trumps "congestion."

»I would have liked to be allowed to include access to goods & services and transit. I think sidewalks are an inherent element in 'safe streets for walking.' An active police presence might be needed for safety - but it's an even better neighborhood if it's not needed. If it's a really livable neighborhood, the only street lighting needed is at intersections. And I betcha that dirty, littered streets usually go hand in hand with dangerous neighborhoods. I wouldn't give a blanket advocation to street trees, because they're not appropriate in arid places. And where do we add peace and quiet and relatively clean air?

»In my own definition a livable neighborhood, is one in which it is most pleasant to be a pedestrian walking. This means that the pedestrians are valued over motor vehicles: streets lights are frequent and oriented towards pedestrians; there are many, safe options to cross the street; sidewalks are wide, clean and unobstructed with excessive clutter; sidewalks take priority over driveways (this means the level of the sidewalk is not influenced by the presence of a driveway) and side streets (this means bulb outs are used to shorten crossing or that sidewalks continue through the side street for a continuous sidewalk); there are comfortable places to sit and observe street life or simply rest; the sidewalk experience is not invaded by having to deal with loud speeding traffic; where one children can play, jump around without parents fearing their child will be hit by a car if the child makes one mistake; one where pedestrians don't have to wait more than a minute to cross street.
»I feel like these polls often pit solutions equally valuable against each other (not to mention this is a subjective matter, and if it isn't, this poll seems more like a quiz than asking for sincere opinions). In general, a livable neighborhood (as coined by Donald Appleyard) is one which is friendly, and connected. In Appleyard's studies these factors were directly related to the volumes of motor vehicle traffic which passed through through the neighborhood. Based on Appleyard's findings one would assume that streets with lower traffic speeds, and lower volumes of motorized traffic would be more livable.
In my experience a 'livable' neighborhood is one which is pleasant to be in, one where people feel comfortable walking on the sidewalks (I have yet to see a 'livable' street where the sidewalks were NOT valued). In LA, York Blvd (and adjacent streets) between Ave 50 and Ave 55 is quickly rising as a model 'livable street' but could see benefit from greater pedestrian prioritization
»One of the greatest quality of life issues in my neighborhood is road noise, which is a direct product of vehicular speed. I live on a short block, but drivers still race up to 35 mph only to slam on their brakes for the next red light. The poor pavement quality amplifies the road noise. Traffic calming would make the street quieter and also safer for walking and biking.
»Public art brings a feeling of humanity to any community and there are artists that will do it at no charge but currently there is no easy government path to bring it about. I'm not only talking about murals.
»Agriculture close by and a long term look at regional transportation. A vision of this new movement system will create the jobs we are all desperately seeking.

    How do you primarily get around today? How would you prefer to travel around in the future?

    Los Angeles is often known for its dominant car culture and notorious for its traffic congestion. However, there are lesser known facts about the city’s transportation system. We boast the second largest transit system in the country, and more than 55 percent of households own 1 or 0 cars. More and more people are bicycling and walking in the city, which are sustainable forms of transportation.
