Making drivers pay for the full and true cost of driving

Driving imposes profound and tangible costs on our city that we don't pay when we turn the ignition: It destroys our streets, makes our air toxic, congests our roads and wreaks carnage on our follow man.

However, we pay only a tiny fraction of those costs when we drive -- i.e. the little bit in gas taxes and fees that fund road projects.

As long as we continue to massively subsidize driving with our lungs and lives, we'll never be a healthy and resilient city.

Raising the price of driving -- be it through gas taxes or parking fees -- will encouraging less polluting and safer modes of travel. Above all, it would make our city a better place to live.
